Jean Dunand desgined with the Shabaka a very unique timepiece. The Shabaka combines a minute-repeater on cathedral gongs plus an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a unique display of the dates, phases of the moon and leap-year cycle, as well as an ingenious state-of-wind indicator.

Shabaka’s minute-repeater strikes on cathedral gongs that go twice around the movement to give a deeper, more resonant chime. The minute-repeater slide occupies the left of the case, allowing the calendar setting controls to reside on the right. Only two chronograph-style pushers are needed to set the entire calendar, the pusher at 4 o’clock advances the date a day at a time, while that at 2 o’clock advances days only. A push-piece set coaxially in the crown advances the months and years, while the moon is set by a push-piece in the case-band at 5 o’clock.

The Art Deco-inspired design of the Shabaka has powerful Egyptian influences and is namedafter the 25th-dynasty Pharaoh and King of Egypt.
The MECCANICO dG can be described as a dense cluster of microsystems featuring extremely elaborate cam and gear assemblies. Its exclusive de GRISOGONO handwound mechanical movement comprises 651 components. It is composed of an analogue display of the hours and minutes on the upper dial and a digitally displayed second timezone on the lower dial. The mechanically operated digital display of the second timezone shows tens of hours, single hours, tens of minutes and single minutes, all displayed by mobile microsegments driven by an assemblage of 23 cams connected to a set of gears and a triggering and synchronization system.

The time information is displayed by an array of 23 horizontally and vertically positioned microsegments. Vertical segments are 9 mm high and weigh at most 25 milligrams while the horizontal segments measure 2.90 mm in length and weigh only 10 milligrams. The segments have four faces: two opposing visible faces fitted with colored strips and two opposing unmarked faces. Time changes are effected by 90° rotations of the required segment or segments. Involving one to twelve segments, time changes are lightning fast.

Launched to mark an exceptional horological year at de GRISOGONO, the MECCANICO dG is being produced in a limited edition of 177 watches in titanium and 177 in white gold.

URWERK unveiled their latest audacious creation, the UR-202. In 2006 Urwerk already amazed with the Urwerk 103 and in 2007 it was the time for the Urwerk 210 to shine.
The new UR-202 is highly dramatic and features besides the patented
revolving satellite complication the innovative new winding system regulated by compressed air.
The UR-202 is the world’s first watch with the winding rate regulated by fluid
dynamics. As long ago as the 18th century, clockmakers were using air
friction to regulate the speed of chiming clocks, and their techniques evolved
to become the preferred method of regulating the rate of chimes on minuterepeaters.
With the UR-202, URWERK have taken the traditional idea of using air
friction and refined it to control the rate of automatic winding.

The UR-202’s twin turbines are coupled with the winding rotor. According to
the position of the selector lever, the turbines act as shock absorbers. In
normal activity they cushion sharp movements of the rotor. This reduces
wear and increases the lifespan of the movement.

The turbine system is totally self-contained within the waterproof case.
The air flows from under the turbines and is channeled up past them under
a sapphire plate and down through holes leading to a tiny air chamber.

The UR-202 also features URWERK’s patented Revolving Satellite
Complication with telescopic minutes hands. The Revolving Satellite
Complication displays time using telescopic minutes hands operating through
the middle of three orbiting and revolving hours satellites.

The URWERK UR-202 is available in white gold, red gold, black PE-CVD platinum and AlTiN.
Measurements are 45.6mm x 43.5mm x 15mm.

Tag Heuer released details about their first mobile phone. The Tag Heuer Meridiist cell phone will be launching in September reports I4U NEWS.

We reported about the first Rumors of a Tag Heuer mobile phone back in January of 2007.

The Tag Heuer Meridiist will carry over the luxury materials Tag Heuer uses in its famous watches. The Tag Heuer Meridiist will be hand assembled from 430 components and constructed from corrosion-resistant, watch making 316L steel. The displays are protected by unscratchable 60.5 carats sapphire crystal.

Of course Tag Heuer found a way to feature a time display in a very cool way on the Meridiist. On the top of the handset a digital time display makes this phone unique. It is a good thing that the early fake concepts of a Tag Heuer phone have been totally false.

The World's largest watch trade-show BaselWorld came to a close again. As reported despite world-wide financial turbulences and economic down-turn in some parts of the world, the BaselWorld 2008 broke again its visitor record. 106,800 visitors descended onto Basel to see the newest watches and jewelry.

We reported about tons of new wristwatches over the last weeks and by far have not covered all of the new releases - It is an impossible task.
The heritage of Wrist Dreams lies in reporting about watches that feature unique technology or electronics. Over the years I expanded the coverage to luxury watches as well.
The technology aspect is still very strong. I am not that much interested in reporting about diamond studded or traditional styled timepieces. This year I saw a stronger trend towards very technical and futuristic styled watches, which I like very much. The color black is part of the new trend as it underlines the technical and sometimes minimalist look. Below I feature Wrist Dreams highlights from the BaselWorld 2008.

Tag Heuer again demonstrated its advanced technical skills with a new Tag Heuer Grand CARRERA Calibre 36 RS Caliper Concept Chronograph (photo). It is the world's first automatic chronograph with 1/10th of a second Caliper Rotating Scale.

The Zenith Defy Xtreme Tourbillon ZERO-G El Primero is a mean looking master piece that actually defies gravity. ZENITH has devised a Zero-G (zero gravity) system. The gyroscope cage Tourbillon comprises an escapement mounted on cardan joints rather like marine chronometers.

The black RSW Outland features a square face that has big screws to attach the band, could be straight out of a sci-fi movie.

The Hamilton Code Breaker pays tribute to Sci-fi fans.

The Hublot Big Bang Aero Bang mixes tradition with technology and black, which results in a very strong wristwatch.

The Bell & Ross BR GRAND MINUTEUR has a mechanical movement with manual winding and stunning looks.

Last but not least, SEIKO designed the Spring Drive Spacewalk, which will be worn by Richard Garriott when he will be the first private individual to do a spacewalk from the ISS.

The BaselWorld 2008 comes to a close and it is another record breaking year for the largest watch trade-show in the world.

The 2,087 exhibiting companies from 45 countries were thrilled at the record figure of 106,800 visitors (up 5%) to the show from around the world.
François Thiébaud, President of the Swiss Exhibitors Committee, also hailed BASELWORLD 2008 a great success: "Anyone who believed the reports of economic doom and gloom ahead of the Show has been misled: it may have been cold outside, but the sun has certainly shone in the halls. The results are excellent. Once again, 2008 has proved even better than previous years."

Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, said at the conclusion of the Show: "It was fantastic! Our customers have been extremely enthusiastic. We are very happy with the extraordinary attendance figures and the volume of orders achieved."

A record figure of 2,981 accredited journalists (up 8% on the previous year) also underlines the importance of BASELWORLD to the luxury goods industry as a whole. All of the major specialist magazines, hundreds of lifestyle magazines, daily newspapers and online media from all over the world - as well as countless television broadcasters - reported on BASELWORLD and the products and innovations on show in Basel over the past eight days.

The BaselWorld 2009 will take place from March 26 to April 2, 2009 at the Exhibition Center Basel.

Austrian watch maker Laks unveils the world's first wristwatch with integrated DVB-T TV tuner. At first I thought this is another take of a wrist TV watch, which is dearly needed, after the NHJ demise in 2005, but the Laks DVB-T TV watch does not have a display.

Swiss Rama Watch Sa offers under RSW brand interesting timepieces. At the BaselWorld 2008 they introduced the RSW Outland. I am always fascinated by watch designs that are very technical and have an futuristic touch. The RSW Outland features a square face that has big screws to attach the band, could be straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Rama says "The RSW Outland design is inspired by the postmodern "high-tech" movement of the 1970s, a period in which architecture was a privileged mode of expression and a concept that is loyally incarnated by the Outland timepiece."
Contrary to the principle of indicating time using hands, it is time itself that moves around a fixed monolithic marker in this innovative timepiece. Hours, minutes and seconds hands are replaced by three discs that turn to the rhythm of the movement. As a final touch and in-keeping with RSW's other automatic watches, the Outland model also features the famous folding crank-crown mechanism.
Measurements of the Outland are height 52 mm, width: 44mm, thickness: 12mm.

There are four variations of the RSW Outland available: matt 316L steel, black PVD steel, black PVD steel combined with matt 316L steel, or 18 carat pink gold combined with matt 316L steel - All cases are available with or without diamond-setting (88 diamonds - 0.62 ct) - Sapphire crystal, crown with patented fold-out crank system - Water-resistant to 10 ATM - Swiss-made, mechanical movement with automatic winding - Hours, minutes and seconds on disks - Dials in black, gray or pink gold, with Arabic numerals - Strap in black rubber with folding clasp.
