I am not that pleased with BaselWorld 2009 as the interest from readers was much lower than for BaselWorld 2008 or BaselWorld 2007. There have been some interesting new watches, but also not that many. We also did not expand our coverage as the BaselWorld coverage we did, did not catch on. My conclusion is that the overall interest in luxury watches is at a low, but there is still a core of wealthy individuals that is interested and they are not surfing the web to get the details on a Harry Winston Opus 9. They go either to BaselWorld or their Harry Winston store.
The BaselWorld 2010 will take place March 18 – 25, 2010. Mark your calendar in case the economy has improved again by then and you have time again to dream about luxury watches.

2009 marks possibly the year of the most releases of new Tag Heuer Monaco watches. Besides the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 and the Monaco 1969 Original Re-Edition and the Monaco 24 Concept, Tag Heuer unveils at the BaselWorld 2009 also the new Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Gulf Limited Edition.
Similar to the Monaco Calibre 12 the Calibre 12 version of the Monaco Gulf keeps the original look but adds new technology and a crystal back window.]]>
The larger (39mm) case gives the watch a more contemporary look, while the orange and blue meteor dial design, inspired by the Porsche Gulf 917K driven by Steve McQueen in Le Mans, expresses its professional racing heritage. Vintage “Gulf” logo and date window at 6 o’clock, small second at 3 and chronograph minute at 9, faceted and a stylish grey alligator strap with grey stitching – the 5,000-pieces edition is a racing purist’s dream machine.
The new Monaco Gulf is slated for a September release.

The components are further insulated against shock and torque by a new “composite filter” material used in aerospace and auto racing. Custom built in industrial-grade tungsten, the three arrows of the oscillating weight echoes a GT car's chrome mags.
The large-faced, black-textured dial bears an oversize "24" at 12 o'clock, in honor of the 24 of Le Mans, and the iconic blue and orange livery of Gulf Oil – the same colors TAG Heuer Ambassador Steve McQueen wore in his 1970 film classic, Le Mans.
Water resistant to 100 meters, with anti-reflective double-sided treatment on the curved sapphire scratch-resistant crystal glass to ensure the best readability. TAG Heuer calls the Monaco 24 the R&D team’s most daring creation to date.
The Monaco 24 is just a concept at this time, but Tag Heuer always manages to take some of the aspects of this master piece into future Tag Heuer watches.
