Baselworld President Talks About Recession Believe it or not, even an industry that attracts millionaires and a customer base that would seem to be able to weather economic storms, watch and jewelry sales are hurt by recessions. That was one of the key comments made in an opening press conference for the Baselworld trade show that opened today in Switzerland.

Jacques Duchene said that the recession has caused significant downturns in the industry. "The gradual drain of expertise should set alarm bells ringing. Highly qualified professionals have lost their jobs," he said in his opening remarks.

Duchene compared today's state of the industry to 2006, effectively saying that three years of evolution and expansion have been lost.

However, despite the rather somber kickoff to the show, the week-long Baselworld trade event promises to showcase a lot of exciting new watches and industry news. Keep checking back for furhter updates from the show between now and the 25th.
